Bella Kowalski, herself a former nun now turned sleuth seeks to solve the puzzle as she becomes embroiled in a murder in Mariposa Bay on California’s scenic Central Coast. Bella suspects the killing is connected with the stormy issue of the Los Lobos wastewater treatment plant. Much is at stake, including her husband Mike’s safety, as she wends her way through a labyrinth of plots, deceptions and untold secrets. The complications are mind-bending and Bella’s options limited as she seeks to avert catastrophe.

Murder in Mariposa Bay Bella Kowalski California Central Coast Mysteries Book 3 edition by Sue McGinty Literature Fiction eBooks

Having read Sue McGinty’s two previous Bella Kowalski novels, I was really anticipating reading Murder in Mariposa Bay. I’ve not only visited and liked that area of California, but also have Chicago roots, so there was a lot to appeal to me when I was first introduced to Bella. But her character (and supporting characters, too) won me over, big time. So, when I started this book I had certain expectations for Bella and the type of intrigues she’d get involved in. But what I actually LOVED about this book, were the constant surprises (to my preconceptions), and they were wonderful surprises and plot and emotional twists-and-turns that even though unexpected by me, made great sense! It was also like Bella revealed more of herself in this book, and the person I’d initially liked, I now liked even more. I read Bella’s latest adventure in one day (afternoon, evening, and into the night). This is a good book on several levels—mystery, writing, plot, and character complexity. I will continue to follow this series, and can't wait to see what Bella does next. Mark of a good book, I think. Highly recommend.

Murder in Mariposa Bay Bella Kowalski California Central Coast Mysteries Book 3 edition by Sue McGinty Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

When I was perusing books at the Morro Bay Library last week, I was surprised to realize I had not yet read Murder at Mariposa Bay by Sue McGinty. How did I miss reading this one? Especially since I am such a fan of Sue McGinty (person and writer). I love her Bella Kowalski series. Thankfully, I rediscovered it and checked it out. (Sorry !) One of the things I love about Sue is that (for the most part) her stories are based locally. And, who wouldn’t love having Mariposa Bay be our very own Morro Bay?! Besides that, she creates a cast of believable characters you can’t help but appreciate – whether they are the good or the bad guy.
Sue’s writing style reminds me of Dashiell Hammett and Ellery Queen –“…bone-numbing Central Coast drizzle clung to my skinny frame like plastic wrap to a wet chicken,” or, “From the neck up, his shaved head, close-together slate eyes and pit-bull jaw made him look like a thug.” (Actually, he was one of the detectives!) How can you not love these descriptions? This is a good book on several levels—mystery, writing, plot, and character complexity. Also, I am not easily fooled and can usually guess the culprit, but in this one just when I thought I had solved the mystery, Sue took a sharp turn, and completely threw me off the track. I love that she did this to me! If you enjoy a good murder mystery, this one will not disappoint. I know Sue is taking a break from Bella for her next book, but I just wanted to say, I can’t wait for Bella’s return! Thank you, Sue, for this delightful reading adventure.
Enjoying your Bella series, you have produced a character that I can relate too and mysteries that I can enjoy. Looking forward to the next, thank you.
A good story line. F B I INVOLVMENT made story
more predictable. ENJOYED THE SETTING Area the
Hearst Castle and US 1 made the story have more
Credence.
The coastal setting was so well used that I always feel like I know where I am in these books. The characters are well drawn and the plot clever. I look forward to the next in the series.
Bella's life is more than complicated, when she and her husband find a man murdered, who her husband recognized hours before, then denied, shortly after that he disappears - was he kidnapped or was he afraid?
I love all of Sue McGinty's Bella Kowlaski mysteries, but I think this is my favorite. The feisty ex-nun-turned obituary-writer Bella is on her own here, as Mike goes AWOL and seems to have betrayed her. The reader feels abandoned too, since we've become fond of Mike in the earlier books. The sense of place is compelling and the mystery is a page-turner. There's also a lot of comedy, with laugh out loud moments. Can't wait for Bella #4!
The highly respected writer Herbert Gold said that love and death are themes of all great novels. He would be pleased with Sue McGinty's Murder in Mariposa Bay. Love and death are threads woven into her latest novel. Real death happens in the first few pages along with a faked one much later. Buried love occurs with the narrator's dying mother and is unearthed in the cancer stricken woman's final moments. Love is a good motivation for the narrator's worries about her husband, a frustrating man who often angers her. What else would send her on a dangerous search for him? With the threads are skills to make them work. The author presents three dimensional characters. Bella, the narrator, is smart, sassy, and funny, but also vulnerable, strengthening the tale's intensity. Her husband Mike has secrets which make him more intriguing. All of McGinty's characters come to life, most with clouds of mystery. The plot contains surprises and twists, and the reader can follow them without being confused or feeling hoodwinked. The reader would say, "Aha" instead of, "I'm lost." The dialog sounds real and effectively propels the story forward. The prose is sharp. Not one word is unnecessary. To sum up impressions of the book wow!
